Beware of hit and runs when visiting your college student

Visiting your child at college is supposed to be an enjoyable time that leaves memories for years to come. Sadly, many parent’s college visits are memorable for another reason: a hit and run injury.

Hit and run injuries are at an all-time high, according to ABC News. There has been a 60 percent increase in hit and run fatalities since 2009. Currently, an average of 2,000 fatalities occur each year in the United States as a result of a hit and run accident. Sadly, many of these occur around colleges and universities.

According to AAA, one hit and run accident occurs every 60 seconds in the United States. That means, in the time it takes you to read this, at least one hit and run accident has occurred. Researchers believe many of these accidents occur in towns that contain colleges and universities for the following reasons:

  • Younger drivers who recently retained a license
  • Students walking to class and other pedestrian traffic
  • Students walking home from the bars in the dark at night
  • Sports fans walking around on game days
  • Drunk drivers

As a parent, it can be beneficial to instruct your child on the dangers of hit and run accidents. Additionally, when you visit your child at school, make sure to be extra alert of motor vehicles when walking around campus. It is important to remember the basics of pedestrian safety, such as following the crosswalk signs, walking on the sidewalk, looking both ways before crossing the street and wearing bright colors if you will be walking around at night.

Hit and run accidents can be devastating, especially if you or your loved ones sustain an injury. If you are visiting Penn State and become the victim of a hit and run accident, it can be beneficial to consult with a trusted personal injury attorney in the area to discuss your options.
